Fall Football

This fall I did something I never said I would do.... let Carter play football.

He has loved football since he was the size of one himself.  And therein lies the problem.  Seven years later, he isn't much bigger than one.  Yet his love for the game has continued.  He follows the NFL and NCAA.  He has known the rules and nuances of the game for many years. He plays in our living room, playroom, bonus room, and bathtub.  He has even fashioned a version just for bedtime.  All his stuffed animals have names and positions and he is the coach.  He plays in the yard, street, and playground.  He'll play with family, friends, neighbors, strangers, adults, or even himself. He is happy being a player, coach, referee, or commentator. He has been to college games, high school games, and pro games. And if there isn't a live game going on he's happy playing the Wii or PSP, too.

Several years ago he started asking to play on a team.  We looked into some of the well-known leagues for kids in our area.  For the under 8 age group the weight cut off was 85lbs! He weighed less than half that!! I wasn't too excited about the risks of football to begin with.  Now it was definitely out of the question.  besides, he was already playing soccer and baseball anyway. So the discussion was tabled for awhile. This year it came up again and someone happened to mention the Upward Flag Football program to us.  We decided to give it a go.  What a great decision!

We had no idea he would end up on a team being coached by two dear friends from church- Jason and Robert.  We couldn't ask for better leadership.  These strong men of God were wonderful leaders for the boys and their passionate love for the game radiated through the team.

Praying before the game...
Carter was in his element.  He loved every minute of practice and games.  Brooks and Carter completing a pass play...
On the run...

Joshua hiking the ball to Carter at QB...

A little celebratory dancing.  He had his own set of moves this year that he busted out for different occasions.
Shouting directions to his team.  Carter did a good job this year of letting the coaches do the coaching.  He still takes the lead at times, but in an appropriate way.  Off the field however he was still on the job.  All week long he would be running through plays and skills he wanted to do with the team.  We had to laugh one night when he told Billy an elaborate plan for a couple of plays he thought would work good for their next game.  As soon as they got home Billy had an email from one of the coaches with the identical suggestions. Guess he knows what he's talking about :)
Julia spent another season as her brother's biggest fan, faithfully encouraging from the sidelines.  She did get in on moving the chains a few times...
Carter was a flag snatcher, for sure.  He kept his eyes on the prize and was grabbing flags left and right.
Carter and his buddies Jacob and Brooks loved being together on the same team. They were our own version of the Four Horsemen- a threesome in our case...
They had a wonderful season together, pushing each other to be their best, making the tough plays, protecting each others runs, and completing passes...

Thanks for the memories, Broncos! It was a season to remember, so many highlights.

Father/Son Panthers Game

A few weeks ago the boys enjoyed one of their favorite annual traditions- our church's father/soon football game. They headed down to Charlotte to spend some time with Uncle Anthony, cousin Kyle and the rest of the gang. The boys enjoyed an "all football weekend".
Here they are running to the stadium.  Do you think they might be a little excited?
Carter and the Panther...
His favorite part of the day is the pickup football game at the tailgate...

Little QB...
Soaking up some stats pre-game...
Daddy and Carter ready for some football!
Honoring our military...
Game time!!
It turned out to be a great game.  The Panthers lost in the end but only by a few points. The boys decided they were ready for their own game...
Such a fun tradition for these guys and a weekend to just relax, play, and enjoy family and friends.

Challenger Soccer Camp

So what do you do when you hit the hottest week of the summer in NC? Move to the North Pole?
That would really help, but no.  The penguin is Bob.  And he was the mascot for this year's Challenger British Soccer Camp. Carter was so excited to be going back this year. The 100 degree temps don't seem to phase him and playing soccer for three hours every day is exactly what he wants to do.

Bob, on the other hand couldn't take the heat....
We have loved all our past years with Challenger Camps. They expertly teach soccer skills, but more importantly they teach character- respect, responsibility, integrity, leadership, and sportsmanship are coached, encouraged, and emphasized in everything they say and do. The coaches are all top notch.  This year he had Coach Rachel (from Ireland) and Coach Rich (from the UK)...
They plan a week of fast-paced fun, learning, and competition.
The kids were divided into 5 teams that competed in a week long World Cup tournament.
They played their hearts out every day, all day.
In the end, it was Carter's team- Brazil- that won!! They were so surprised when the announcement was made.  It was a combination of game results, participation in spirit events, and character. Carter was very proud of his flag he made for Friday Flag Day.  That's it stuck in the ground in front of their team.  I drew the diamond, but he and Julia did the rest themselves with paint.
Proudly accepting their "trophy"...
Thanks, Challenger, for an awesome week! We were sad to see it end.  Thanks Rich and Rachel for all your heart, wisdom, talent, and endurance you poured into our kids.  I loved Coach Rich's comment on the last day about Carter, "That is one entertaining little man!" Oh, you have no idea! And he's like this 24/7 :)  Can't wait until next August!

Friendly Football

After dinner, the other night the kids started a pickup game of football in the backyard.
Sweet little Ava is barely bigger than the football, at 2 years and 20lbs, but that wasn't about to stop her from getting in on the action.
Billy decided to make her the star of the last play.  She took it all very seriously...
Busted out of the formation around her sister, Claire...
straight up the middle...
and avoided Carter's tackle for the touchdown!!

Baseball Season Closer

Today was the final game of the baseball season for the Arizona State Sun Devils.
It was a scorcher out there on the field at high noon, but we were ready for some baseball.  Coach Chris and Daddy trying to work some logistical magic before the game...
...with everyone's vacations we were down to just 8 players.  This could get interesting.
Carter was batting pretty good today.  Popped the first one up for an out...
 ...but nailed the rest.
With Dante out as a our star first baseman, Carter filled in a few innings...
The boys managed to get pretty good coverage.
Eying up the batter from the pitcher's mound...
After coming out the first inning with 3 runs, they couldn't score for the next few innings and the Red Raiders were up with 6 runs. They weren't giving up though. We started the last inning at the bottom of the lineup down 6-3.  The first two kids got out.  We found ourselves in a familiar, yet uncomfortable situation- 2 outs, last inning.  Things were looking bleak.

The next 4 kids had base hits and they tied it up.  Then Ethan (the lead runner) had to be pulled from second base with heat exhaustion.  Carter had just batted so he was put in as a designated runner.  Rhett was up to bat and had a tough day hitting so far.  He nailed it down the middle and Carter came in to score!!!!
Everyone congratulating Rhett...
Such an awesome finish! These kids have played so hard this season.  They have come from behind with two outs in the bottom of the last inning so many times.  When you think it's hopeless they come through again.  The strong players have been consistent and have worked hard to help out their teammates.  And the young kids on the team never gave up and surprised us so many times.  So proud of these kids! I would love to take this team on the road and see what they can do.  They have made some top 10 plays and have tremendous heart.
Carter receiving his trophy and Coach Chris thanking him for his "coaching" all season.  Evn though he never stops talking, he was helpful :) and made everyone smile- players, coaches, parents, and umps.
Go Arizona State!!!
