Good news... Carter's hearing seems okay.
Bad news... he needs surgery.
Doesn't seem to make sense does it? Well the good news is that Dr. Kraus (ENT) said his ears were infection-free and the tubes look fine. The problem is both of them are blocked- thus the hearing troubles. He feels Carter's ears have grown to the point that he shouldn't need the tubes anymore. His eustachian tubes should be more vertical than horizontal at this point. He feels we have had sufficient time to prove that because of his months with problem-free ears. He has had some form of tubes in his ears for over seven years of his life. But now the t-tubes are coming out! We knew they would have to be surgically removed since they are sewn into his eardrums. This whole process amazes me because the tubes are smaller than the "o" in this sentence!!
He will need a "bilateral fat graft myringoplasty". This involves cutting out the tubes from each ear, taking fat from his ear lobes, creating grafts from that tissue, and grafting it onto the holes in each eardrum. Then we pray for the grafts to take and that his ears heal over the six week recovery period. He wants this done asap because Carter's ears cannot get wet for six weeks- until the grafts take and the eardrums heal. We hope to get it out of the way before summer time.
The surgery scheduler called yesterday and he will have surgery at 9:30am on Tuesday March 27th. Please pray for a safe and successful surgery. It is a very intricate process. I seriously cannot even fathom how all of this goes on inside a tiny little ear. He is in wonderful hands. Dr. Krauss is a brilliant doctor and surgeon- one of the best in the country and a pioneer in the field. He has taken our children into the OR five times already. It is strangely ironic to be taking one of our children for surgery on March 27. That is the day three years ago when Julia had her 8 hour surgery to remove her cancer and organs and put in her portacath. This will be a surreal way to spend the day. Please pray that the grafts take and that the surgery is a complete success.

Keeping you in prayer...oddly enough, after 6 years of tubes, Connor is going in for his pre-op appointment on 3/26 for the same surgery (remove tubes and graft). Two peas in a pod :)
