Happy Birthday Ju-Ju Punkin!

How can it be that you are two already? It seems like just last year you were born and we cherished having a little girl in the house, has it really been two years?! You bring our lives so much joy and laughter.
You are an easy-going, loving, gentle, smart, observant, and joyful. You've been happy and content since the day you were born. You've never been a crier- the only time you get upset is if you are sick or in pain. You're an amazing sleeper, always have been. Your 5 hour afternoon naps are legendary among our friends and you still sleep 12+ hours every night- we still wake you most of the time. You have admired and watched your big brother since the day you were born. You were only 4 mo old when you learn to sit and started playing trucks alongside him. You've never been one to "mess up" his things. You just slipped right in, acting wise beyond your years. Hearing you talk these days, we forget you're only two. Your enunciation is priceless and you've been speaking in sentences for several weeks. You make connections and remember things that astound us. You've recently found your independence and are changing your clothes, dressing yourself, using the potty (not regularly), playing dress up and babies, buckling your own car seat, sitting at the big table and anything else you can try. Your new mantra is "all by self" and you use it frequently. And most of the time you figure out how to do it. I love watching you try and succeed. Your persistence and patience are admirable. It's been a treat hearing you talk and finally knowing what's going on in your head and what you're feeling. You tell us who you love, what you like, what scares you, what you don't want, where you want to go, and what you want to do. About a month ago you started asking "why?". At first we thought it was a fluke- you were just copying someone you heard, but we were wrong- you know exactly what you're asking and you want to know. I'm trying to keep up with you. You've just grown up so fast. We're very proud of the little girl you're becoming!

We celebrated your birthday over Memorial Day weekend with family and friends. We had beautiful sunny weather and enjoyed countless hours outside. Your present from Mommy and Daddy was a new swingset. You have been swinging ever since and couldn't be happier. I think you've sweet-talked everyone in the house with, "JuJu swing? push me please? higher?" Though hearing your giggle and seeing the sheer joy on your face is enough. I think it was the perfect gift.
We had a great time with all our family- Mimi & Grandpa, all you aunts and uncles, and all your cousins came to celebrate with you. We had a full house and a great time playing together.
Your party was on Saturday- a backyard picnic with your new swingset, a bounce house, the sandbox, balloons, lots of yummy food, and friends and family. You were so excited when you saw the food table- your favorite pizza and chickfila chicken nuggets- so many of them in one place! You
kept squealing, "chicken nuggets!" It was so cute.

Sweet little ladies...such pretty little toes!
We finished off the weekend with a family brunch after church. Lots of yummy food for all and a great time to squeeze in some more playtime (Carter's favorite). Grandpa taught the boys to play lacrosse (he even had them in the penalty box a few times). They were quick studies and soon had quite a game going in the backyard. It was even more fun because the NCAA championships were on TV and they could watch what they were learning. Carter has now become the resident lacrosse pro and is recruiting everyone that comes in the backyard. Do you think they have preschool lacrosse teams? Just what we need- another sport. He's now saying he's going to play lacrosse for Navy one day...

And Julia?.........
.............still swinging, and loving every minute!

Take Me out to the Ballgame....

Carter got the unique opportunity to enjoy a classic American dream. The Washington Nationals just opened their new ballpark....4 blocks from Mimi and Grandpa's. We carefully planned this trip to coincide with their series against the Phillies. Carter could not wait. Let's just say he was so excited to be going to a night game he even agreed to take a nap! He hasn't done that in months! Mimi and Grandpa decked him out from head to toe in a new Ryan Howard Phillies uniform and we were off. Like kids in a candy store we started off up the street- I don't know who was more excited.
It is a beautiful park with well-planned architecture and fantastic views. The field opens before you as you enter the main gates. Everything so crisp, clean, and new! We were there early, so Carter took advantage of the awesome playground, watching the batting cages, and the kids-only concession stand- so cool!
Then we found our seats- what an awesome view! Carter settled in with his Dippin Dots (his version of a hot dog :) and took it all in.
He knows the whole line up and was yelling at the teams, just like his Grandpa. As usual he was captivated for the entire game....anxiously waiting for the team to make something happen.
Sadly the Phillies couldn't get it together and lost to a team they should've beat, but it didn't dampen Carter's spirits a bit.

We expected him to be worn out by the end, but he was still rarin' to go. Grandpa carried him for a few blocks and then her ran the rest of the way reenacting his favorite plays, while Grandpa did the commentary. It was a magical night for us all and one Carter is not soon to forget.
Happy fans...headin' home.

Before he went to bed, he told Mimi and Grandpa they were going to put on a play about baseball...and this time the Phillies would win!

Natl Zoo and The Building Museum

Just singin' in the rain.........just singin' in the rain!!

We're big fans of the National Building Museum and were excited to share it with Lily and Claire. The rain on Sunday gave us the perfect opportunity.
"Bob and Wendy" were ready to work:
Little architects in the making. They were such attentive students and built their very own free-standing arch...
We love the courtyard of this building. It's the size of a football field with so much room to roam! The kids can run, yell, spin, and dance- surrounded by such an inspiring backdrop.
Monday, the sun came back just in time for one of our favorites...the zoo- such an amazing place! We make sure to be there in time to watch the elephants get their baths...
The lions were frisky and playful...
and the orangutan climbed across the ropes- right over our heads!
It was a great day. We saw hippos, sea creatures, gorillas, pandas, zebras, farm animals, and so much more. And we topped it all off with slurpees from 7-11, I love that place! (If you live in the north, have one for me.)

Road Trip!

Annmarie and I loaded 4 kids, 4 car seats, a double stroller, a booster seat, sports gear, packnplay, 25 pairs of shoes, baby dolls, and a whole lotta luggage and hit the open road. Destination........DC.
(Yes, they suck their toes...we try not to look.)

We wanted to explore visit our favorite sites before the HHH days of summer arrived and our trip happened to include a visit to the Japanese Embassy and Carter's first Major League Baseball game! The kids were superb travelers (thank you for portable DVDs!) and Mimi and Grandpa were excited to see all of us.

Day is done...

We were a little apprehensive to take the kids to the Japanese Embassy. Would they behave? The ambassador hosts this picnic annually and invites military members and their families as a gesture of appreciation to the US. They assured us the kids were welcome, so off we went. The Saturday of the picnic was a perfect spring day- warm sunshine and bright blue skies. We boarded the beloved metro for our journey to NW. The kids are becoming pros at reading the maps and navigating the stations. We had a beautiful walk from the metro and were met at the embassy by such friendly hosts. They ushered us to the door and into a receiving line with the ambassador, his wife, and aides. Carter and Lily were at the front and proceeded to shake hands and bow to each person they met. Annmarie and I smiled in proud disbelief- so far so good.

We walked through the main rooms and were in awe of the grandiose chandeliers, ornate wallpaper, and draperies.
The grounds were beautiful- huge rolling hills, gardens, and tables full of delicious food.
They had fun activities for the kids...

Fishing for yo-yo balloons

Origami animals

Kanji

The koi pond
(don't worry, no one got wet)

The traditional gardens
It was a great afternoon. The kids were all very good. The food was divine and we all left quite satisfied. The gardens were beautiful and made you feel like you were somewhere far away. The hospitality was gracious and welcoming. Everyone we met was so friendly and talkative. The kids loved just running around in the grass exploring and playing.

The ambassador's wife (Hanayo) came over to talk to us and visit with the kids. She loved our sit n stand stroller and was telling us stories of raising twins in Japan- trying to push two single strollers and washing all the diapers herself. She was so personable and endearing :)
