(Yes, they suck their toes...we try not to look.)We wanted to explore visit our favorite sites before the HHH days of summer arrived and our trip happened to include a visit to the Japanese Embassy and Carter's first Major League Baseball game! The kids were superb travelers (thank you for portable DVDs!) and Mimi and Grandpa were excited to see all of us.

We were a little apprehensive to take the kids to the Japanese Embassy. Would they behave? The ambassador hosts this picnic annually and invites military members and their families as a gesture of appreciation to the US. They assured us the kids were welcome, so off we went. The Saturday of the picnic was a perfect spring day- warm sunshine and bright blue skies. We boarded the beloved metro for our journey to NW. The kids are becoming pros at reading the maps and navigating the stations. We had a beautiful walk from the metro and were met at the embassy by such friendly hosts. They ushered us to the door and into a receiving line with the ambassador, his wife, and aides. Carter and Lily were at the front and proceeded to shake hands and bow to each person they met. Annmarie and I smiled in proud disbelief- so far so good.
We walked through the main rooms and were in awe of the grandiose chandeliers, ornate wallpaper, and draperies.
The grounds were beautiful- huge rolling hills, gardens, and tables full of delicious food.
They had fun activities for the kids...

It was a great afternoon. The kids were all very good. The food was divine and we all left quite satisfied. The gardens were beautiful and made you feel like you were somewhere far away. The hospitality was gracious and welcoming. Everyone we met was so friendly and talkative. The kids loved just running around in the grass exploring and playing.

The ambassador's wife (Hanayo) came over to talk to us and visit with the kids. She loved our sit n stand stroller and was telling us stories of raising twins in Japan- trying to push two single strollers and washing all the diapers herself. She was so personable and endearing :)
