It was a beautiful night- cool temperatures, clear skies, and no humidity. There was an overwhelming turnout- over 400 of Grandpa's friends, family, classmates, colleagues, fellow Marines, etc. It truly was a snapshot of his entire life up to this point. Carter has been practicing with his 'rifle' (Mimi's cane from her surgery) all week. He has learned a good portion of the Manual of Arms and has learned many of the drill commands. He is quite proud of the fact that when he wears his cover and salutes all the Marines at the Barracks, they salute him back. He brought his utilities to wear to the retirement ceremony. He was so excited about his first set of real dog tags! Walking to the parade field....
The Drum and Bugle Corps did a fantastic job with the music, 'Uncommon Valor', 'Olympic Spirit', and 'God Bless the USA'. When they perform 'Proud to Be an American', they lower their instruments at the end and sing. It brings down the crowd every time. You can help but tear up.
General Conway, the Commandant, officiated the retirement.
Both my parents received commendation letters that were read at the ceremony...
Tonight is so bittersweet. So many memories, so many people, our only known way of life. It was too much to grasp and think about at once...
A chance to reflect, reminisce, and remember...
Then it was time to walk off in to the sunset, down Center Walk, as the band played 'Auld Lang Syne'. Time to start the next chapter and begin their retired life in PA.
Carter walked out with Gen. Amos, the Assistant Commandant. He was thrilled to be saluted again and did Grandpa very proud.
A quick hug before bedtime...
The party went on for several hours. The food was delicious and the fellowship fantastic. It is only a few times in your life that so many people you love and cherish gather in one place. We are so thankful for everyone who took the time and effort to come out for this night.
Don't worry, he's not hanging up his dog tags completely. Beginning at the end of September he will be a part-time consultant to the Marine Corps doing what he loves- working hands on with Marines at bases around the world. We're so proud of you Dad. Thanks for the amazing life as a Marine Corps 'brat'. I am so thankful Carter and Julia had the privilege of experiencing these last few legs with you. It is an opportunity they will never forget.
Semper Fidelis!
