Strawberry Picking

We've been having a good week so far. The highlight has definitely been strawberry picking. We've been talking a lot about plants and growing with our garden, flowers, and Carter's homeschool lessons. We also found this great link from our local growers with a storybook and activities for kids. The book explains how the planting is done and how strawberries grow. We saw every one of the things on our trip from the tractor, down to the bee hives for the bees.

The kids were all really excited. It was their first time and they all grabbed their little buckets and were off to the fields. This farm is actually only 5 minutes from our house and is owned by the sweetest, most helpful family. After a quick demo, the kids were off. They all did great.

Carter liked to fill his bucket and come dump it in mine, so he could pick more.
Julia was very focused and picked out her strawberries with such care.

Allison and Shana...
I have to give quick props to Annmarie. Here, my friends, is a 9 month pregnant mom of 2 who picked strawberries with grace and ease. You go girl!!
(And no, baby girl did not make an appearance at the patch. We look forward to finally meeting her in a few weeks!!)

This about sums up the experience...
The older ones were walking the rows looking for the most strawberries. Julia and Olivia sat and picked their favorites. And Claire and Allison would fill their buckets and then sit down and eat all their treasures :)

We filled our buckets in no time and it was time to head back to the farmhouse. Julia came down the row saying, "I was pickin' and pickin' and eatin' and eatin'!" We all were, how could you resist this?

After we paid for our berries, it was time to feed the goats and baby cow. They were so friendly. The kids jumped right in. The goats would come halfway through the fence and they were petting, feeding, and hugging them (all except Julia who preferred to keep a safe distance). We finished off the morning with a picnic lunch and strawberry ice cream cones. We can't wait to go back.

And the best part is for me is turning these into this- yummo! I love strawberry pie and it's so easy to make! Hop over to my recipe blog and make one for yourself :) Enjoy!

MMMmmmmmmm! Very nice! So glad you posted the recipe- we are picking next weekend. Bummed I'll be in Charlotte and won't be able to get up to see you, but it's a very quick trip for work. Hugs-
