Memorable Monday

Our time away has definitely been healing for all of us. We've made lots of time for fun. This morning after breakfast we made stained-glass crosses. They actually weren't too messy and the kids loved making them. Thank you Oriental Trading for your ready to go craft projects- moms love them!

Julia has spent hours playing dollhouse...

And there's nothing more therapeutic than a good old tickle fight with Mimi and Grandpa...

And for Carter, the more hours he spends in the racquetball court the better. He actually has quite some skill these days- making diving shots, hitting consistent backhands, and hitting trick shots behind his back!
Julia asked to go outside today. I think being home all the time is taking its toll. And the rainy cold weather isn't helping. She was thrilled to just be out...We walked over to visit the tulips at Gen. Conway and Ms. Annette's. They are beautiful, and everywhere.
Then she got to do her favorite activity, swinging in the big swing under the tree. Thanks Ms. Annette!!!
The Marines are having their parade dress rehearsals every day this week, so Carter was glued to the window in Grandpa's office. We love the front row seats!

Then it was off to the ballpark. The new Nationals stadium is just a few blocks over from their house and it just so happens this afternoon was......and they were playing our beloved, lifelong favorite, world champion- Philadelphia Phillies!! Does it get any better?! Grandpa treated Carter and me to tickets. We were all excited. I don't know which of us loves baseball more- it's a close call :)

The stadium is amazing and a fittingly patriotic place to be. A National Guard group, just home from Afghanistan, brought out the huge flags before the national anthem.

Then a group of military aircraft flew over...
Then we paused for a moment of silence and prayer for the Phillies beloved announcer, Harry Kalas (73) who died at the stadium, in the pressbox, right before the game. He has been the voice of the Phillies for 39 years and actually coined the phrase, "Outta here!" It was a shock to everyone. As sad as it was I'm sure he wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else. We're so thankful he saw his beloved Phillies win the World Series last year. Then they had a member from each of the five services throw out the first pitches. Then they recognized the wounded Marines from Bethesda and the crowd gives them a standing ovation. They actually have a front row box at the stadium for the wounded to attend every game. Okay, enough tears for one baseball game, lets play ball!

Jamie Moyer was the starting Phillies' pitcher. This man just amazes me. The power and endurance he has at the age of 47 is astounding! Seeing him pitch in the World Series, in the wee hours, pitch after pitch, even though he was sick- inspiring (and he's got seven kids!!). It was cool to see him in person.

It was an awesome game- home runs, stolen bases, diving catches, missed throws, and a strong rally. The Phillies took the lead after Howard's 3 run homer and posted some great runs, it seemed a done deal. They brought in Lidge to close, which is his specialty, and the Nats rallied back with 2 home runs. The place was going crazy. There was a huge presence of Phillies fans who had been cheering throughout the game. It was a nail biter till the very last pitch and the Phillies one it 9-8. This one's for you Kalas! Go Phillies!
We headed home Tuesday morning. Julia was so excited to get in the car and watch a DVD (Mimi and Grandpa don't have DVD players) and when we got in the car to leave, guess what came to a sad, grinding halt... the DVD player. I had a quick moment and jumped in hoping for the best. Well, we made it about two hours when I couldn't take the crying anymore. Carter amuses himself well in the car, but Julia prefers movies. It's so hard for kids, too. They are in these 5point harness seats for 8 years and can't reach anything or even move for that matter. After reaching to get her things about 12 times I decided we were stopping at Target to procure new ones. Apparently Little Einsteins is her drug of choice and DVD players are mine. We made it back to the electronics department and the place was a mess and stripped of merchandise. Turns out its electronics restocking week at every Target on the east coast. After much conversing we managed to find one in the store and get them installed in the rain. I was pretty proud of myself. Yippee! It was a smooth trip the rest of the drive. When we got home five hours later, Julia decided she didn't want to get out of the car. She has had trouble with transitions lately and the doctors told us to give her control over as many little things in her life as we can. So she sat happily buckled in the car seat, in the driveway, for another hour and 45 minutes! I guess being strapped in like that isn't as bad as I thought! She's definitely happy to be home...
